The Sony Alpha a7R II introduces a groundbreaking 42.4-megapixel Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor, coupled with the powerful BIONZ X image processor. This innovative pairing not only delivers high-resolution stills and videos but also significantly reduces noise and enhances operational speed. The sensor's design incorporates a gapless on-chip lens structure, an anti-reflection coating, and the removal of the optical low-pass filter. These advancements improve light absorption and fine detail rendering. Furthermore, a copper wiring layer dramatically accelerates data transmission, enabling high-resolution 42.4-megapixel stills even at ISO 102,400 and facilitating internal UHD 4K video recording with a wide dynamic range, courtesy of the full-frame sensor.

5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization

Within the sleek a7R II, a 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system counteracts five types of camera shake encountered during handheld photography and videography. This feature permits the confident use of various lenses, even adapted ones, without suffering from blur caused by shaky hands. The system compensates for up to 4.5 stops of shutter speed, ensuring sharp results. Long focal lengths benefit from pitch and yaw correction, while macro and high-magnification shots enjoy horizontal and vertical shift compensation. The roll compensation is universally useful and operates seamlessly with third-party lenses, adapters, or lenses with built-in optical stabilization. Manual settings for focal length input are available for lenses that don't transmit data to the camera.

Fast Hybrid AF with 399 Phase-Detect Points

The a7R II boasts a revamped Fast Hybrid AF system, featuring 399 on-sensor phase-detect AF points, covering 45% of the frame, and 25 contrast-detect AF points. This enhancement elevates speed, accuracy, and tracking performance. Thanks to the back-illuminated sensor structure, readout speed is increased, allowing tracking at the top continuous shooting rate of 5 fps, with up to 24 frames in a burst when shooting in JPEG Fine L format at 42 MP. The system also offers a Lock-on AF tracking feature, significantly improving accuracy and stability in tracking moving subjects. Eye AF prioritizes a subject's pupil for stunning portraits, even with a shallow depth of field.

UHD 4K Video Recording in XAVC S Format

The a7R II sets a new standard as the first full-frame camera to provide internal UHD 4K video recording at 30 or 24 fps. This is attainable using either the full-frame sensor or the Super 35 format, which employs oversampling without pixel binning, effectively minimizing moiré and aliasing. The camera benefits from live tracking thanks to the 399 phase-detection AF points in the Fast Hybrid AF system. Furthermore, it offers the flexibility to switch between NTSC and PAL operation for global use. While internal recording delivers 4:2:0 sampling at 8-bit, the a7R II offers clean HDMI output for use with an external recorder, capturing 4:2:2 uncompressed video in an edit-ready format.

Timecode and User Bit Settings

For diverse workflows, the a7R II offers multiple timecode recording options, including 'Record Run' and 'Free Run' modes, which can be especially useful for syncing multiple cameras during live events. Timecode can be recorded in both drop frame and non-drop frame modes. When recording internally, the camera can output timecode via HDMI, ensuring precise synchronization.

Customizable Picture Profiles and S-Log2 Gamma

To fully utilize its dynamic range during video recording, the a7R II provides extensive customizable color and gamma controls. Users can fine-tune gamma, black level, knee, color level, and more. The camera also supports the S-Log2 Gamma Curve, found in high-end Sony Cinema cameras, expanding dynamic range by up to 1300% compared to traditional REC709, enabling greater post-production flexibility.

3.0" 1,228.8k-Dot Tilting LCD Monitor

Featuring an upgraded 1,228.8k-dot resolution, the LCD screen offers a superior platform for composing shots, adjusting settings, and reviewing content. It tilts upward by 107° and downward by 41°, accommodating various shooting angles. Sunlight visibility is enhanced through WhiteMagic technology, which doubles brightness via an RGBW pixel structure.
